AEDs are portable electronic devices that automatically diagnose the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia (rapid heartbeat) in a patient, and deliver a therapeutic dose of electric current to the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.
“When the heart goes into a ventricular fibrillation, there is 3 to 5 minutes’ time to revive it, therefore it is highly critical to revive the patient’s heart as quick as possible and here’s where the AEDs are good for,” Erfan Naghsh, the project manager of the automated external defibrillator, told Mehr News.
He went on to add, “in other countries, defibrillators are usually set up in fire engines, public centers, residential towers and crowded places. Most definitely, the law of installing electroshock devices at public places will be introduced in Iran within the next ten years and thus, we should focus on the mass production of this device.”
The AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the lay person, and the Iranian model enjoys the same high accuracy and speed of its foreign versions, he said.
“We predict that the demand for our AEDs will be more than 400 devices in a year, and after meeting the domestic needs, we will start exporting the device to countries in the Middle East,” he said.
