TEHRAN, Jun. 20 (MNA) – Iran national Greco-Roman team scooped three golds and one bronze at the Poland Open, Ziolkowski & Pytlasinski 2016.

The LIX International W. Pytlasinski Memorial devoted to senior Greco-Roman wrestling competitions took place on 17-19 June in Poland’s Spała where Iran’s Mahdi Zeidvand (66kg), Ramin Taheri (80kg) as well as Mahdi Aliyari (98kg) won gold medals while Bashir Babajanzadeh bagged the bronze medal of 130kg weight category.

Competing at 66kg weight group, Mahdi Zeidvand of Iran struck an off draw in the first round while he defeated the South Korean wrestler 8-0 in the second round. The Iranian representative had to subdue Mateusz Bernatek of the host country 5-3 as well as Cuba’s Miguel Martínez 2-1 en route to the final where he downed the South Korean competitor standing on the top podium.

Payam Buyeri and Hossein Noori of Iran offered poor performances and landed in tenth places of 75 and 85kg categories, respectively.

Iran had deployed two 130-kg representatives to the Polish tournament, Amir Ghasemi Monjazi and Bashir Babajanzadeh. The two teammates faced each other in the second round while it was Babajanzadeh who breezed past his compatriot though he conceded a defeat against the Hungarian rival in the semi-final round. In the repechage section, Bashir babajanzadeh overwhelmed Maxim Peshkov of Belarus winning the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Amir Ghasemi Monjazi only managed to finish in the eighth place.

Iranian athletes, Ramin Taheri (80kg) and Mahdi Aliyari (98kg) had won the title of their respective weight categories while Mehrdad Mardani (59kg) had only managed to land seventh on the first day of the event.
