NEW YORK, Jun. 14 (MNA) –The fulfillment of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development will be the priority for the next president of the General Assembly of the United Nations in its 71st Period of Sessions, stated Peter Thomson (Fiji Islands) after being elected for the post Monday.

Thomson told the press that the Agenda 2030 is way to guarantee the survival of the planet Earth, combine harmony with nature and a different world for the future generations.

"What we have up to now is not enough. The plan we have agreed is not perfect, but it has a great deal of completion," he said, after receiving the vote of 94 of 193 member countries to beat Andreas Mavroyiannis (Cyprus) who reached 80 votes.

Thomson will start his mandate on September 13, with the beginning of the 71st Period of Sessions, and insisted on the need of a global commitment with the Agenda 2030, complete application of the Climatic Objective of Paris, gender equity and changes that may strengthen the work of the General Assembly.

The General Assembly also condemned the Sunday terrorist attack in the city of Orlando, Florida, where dozens of people lost their lives.
