Addressing the UN Security Council's periodic Middle East debate on Tuesday, Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador Gholamhossein Dehghani strongly condemned the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime in occupied territories such as attacks on civilians, the inhumane blockade of Gaza, destruction of Palestinian homes, the settlement-building in the West Bank, violation of the Islamic identity of Jerusalem, and the illegal seizure of Palestinian territories, and once again highlighted NAM’s full-out support for the Palestinian people against Israeli occupation.
“The UN Security Council has proved to be incapable of resolving this crisis and the occupying Zionist regime continues its inhumane and colonial policies without fear of any punishment,” said Dehghani, adding that these policies are a clear violation of all international principles, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, and have been condemned by the international community.
“The NAM movement stresses that this situation will not last and the occupation and impunity of this regime that has been the cause of great suffering for the Palestinian people and many crises and instabilities in the Middle East must be stopped,” he said.
Dehghani added that NAM also denounces Israel’s frequent violations of Lebanon’s territorial integrity and its continued occupation of Golan Heights.
Israel's UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, in the meeting on Tuesday in a baseless claim, called the Islamic Republic’s support for the Resistance movement in Palestine and Lebanon supporting terrorism and called on the UNSC to closely monitor the implementation of Iran’s nuclear agreement.
In response to Danon’s allegations, Dehghani maintained that such accusations are raised merely as a cover-up for Israel’s atrocious and terrorist policies and actions which are one of the main causes of violence and extremism in the Middle East.
“It is quite absurd that the demand for close monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program has been raised by a regime that is itself the sole obstacle preventing the Middle East from being void of any nuclear weapons,” said Dehghani.
“These remarks about Iran’s nuclear case are nothing but a new destructive trend that the Zionist regime follows after its humiliating defeat in trying to deviate the nuclear negotiations from its main course,” he said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon commented Tuesday on the recent wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians, saying it was part of "human nature" to react to an occupation. He also urged Israel to freeze its settlement-building, which he called "an affront to the Palestinian people and to the international community."
