Having claimed three gold, one silver and one bronze medal of Grand Prix competitions over the past two years, Farzan Ashourzadeh managed to reach the finals of the fourth Grand Prix event of the year by out powering all his rivals in the -58kg weight category where he failed to overcome the South Korean taekwondoka.
In the opening match of Mexico’s championship, Iran’s representative achieved a 8-5 victory against Lucas Gyzhman of Argentina.
The young Iranian athlete, who has been called the ‘Taekwondo tsunami’ by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), had the upper hand in the semi-finals where he subdued the host country taekwondo practitioner and international medalist César Rodríguez Luna and reached the finals of the tournament.
In the final match, Ashourzadeh failed to down the South Korean competitor Tae-hun Kim who possesses two world championship gold medals of 2013 and 2015, gold medal of Asian championships and Asian Games in 2014, as well as one gold, one silver and 3 bronze medals in the last two years of Grand Prix events.
Previously, Ashourzadeh had managed to grab a bronze medal in the 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series 3 in Britain after he failed to defeat the Spanish contestant Jesús Tortosa Cabrera in the semi-final.
Masoud Hajizavareh, the other member of Iran’s taekwondo national team, could down Damon Sansom 6-5 in the -80kg weigh category while he was overcome by Aoron Cook of Moldova failing to advance to the finals of the competitions.
Hajizavareh went past Albert Gaun of Russia in his last combat bagging the silver medal of the tournament.
