Russia will join Cuba and most of the international community in the steps to achieve the all-out removal of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The Foreign Ministry’s Media Department told the reporters that the country condemns the economic pressure exerted by Washington with the objective of changing Cuba’s political system, which is nowadays perceived as a reminder of the Cold War.
Russia, on Tuesday, voted at the UN General Assembly in favor of the draft resolution on the need to eliminate the U.S. economic, financial and commercial sanctions against Havana.
Russian diplomats stress that this policy hampers the island’s socio-economic development and represents an obstacle for Cuba’s commitment to Sustainable Development Agenda for the next fifteen years.
Inspired on the UN Charter’s fundamental principles on the rejection to any discrimination and interference in the nations’ internal affairs, we call for a prompt and complete elimination of the blockade against Cuba, the text adds.
The Foreign Ministry also urged the US administration to reject all unilateral economic measures to exert pressure on sovereign states, which worsen confrontation trends in the world, the statement adds.
While addressing the general Assembly, the Russian permanent representative to the UN Vitali Churkin condemned the blockade and described it as a "relic of the past", which should be abolished immediately, the diplomat said.
