Japanese FM Fumio Kishida added that today’s meeting was the first after the historic nuclear deal between Iran and the 5+1 group of countries and were mainly focused on new horizons in the two countries' bilateral relations.
“Both countries have agreed to establish a cooperation council so that there will be a comprehensive monitoring on all ministries of Japan and Iran,” said Kishida.
The Japanese diplomat also added that the two sides have agreed to continue cooperation in the fields of environment, health and the fight against drug trafficking.
According to Kishida, the two sides were also scheduled to have extensive discussions on the situation in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, as well as regional issues such as violent extremism; “Iran as a historical superpower can play an effective role in settling these issues,” he said.
Iranian foreign minister, for his part, described the prospect of Iran-Japan relations as highly positive, saying there are great potential in both countries’ private sector for investment and production, as well as nuclear and environmental cooperation.
Zarif also added that the two countries have prepared the ground to increase regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking.
FM Fumio Kishida’s Monday visit to Tehran is the second one in the last two years. Zarif and Kishida have held talks five times during this period of time.
