HAVANA, Sep. 26 (MNA) – Cuba pointed out that despite the measures taken by US President Barack Obama to change some aspects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade set by the US, this blockade remains still in force.

The report presented by Cuba to the General Assembly of the United Nations on the subject, reiterates that, according to the UN resolution 69/5 and the repeated resolutions issued by the United Nations, there is still the need to end such a punitive siege that has caused serious damage to the Cuban people.

The document includes a detailed report about the impact of the blockade on the economy and all the society since 1962, the goal of which was to overcome the resistance of Cuba and destroy the revolutionary process.

Amid the main laws passed by the US Congress to support the blockade is the so-called Law of Trading with the Enemy, which empower the Government to take economic sanctions in wartime or in any other period of national emergency.

These powers were restricted in 1977 but the law continued in force against Cuba despite the US Government never declared the emergency regarding Cuba, however, under this law Cuban assets are frozen in the United States, the import of goods from Cuba was banned, becoming the only country affected by this law.

It was followed by the Presidential Proclamation 3437, the regulations of the Treasury Department and the misnamed Law for the Cuban democracy and Law for the Freedom and Democratic Solidarity, the latter known as the Helms-Burton Law.

This real tangle of laws, drawn up to opposing the presidential decision and to consolidate the blockade, are the ones that the US Congress must eliminate to leave behind the sad episode of its latest attacks on Cuba.
