Croatian authorities announced they were suspending truck traffic from Serbia, after closing seven border points, thrgouh which came more than 27,000 undocumented immigrants in recent days, mostly Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans.
The head of the commission for Syria of the Human Rights Council, Brazilian Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, denounced the international failure to stop the war in the Levantine nation, responsible, along with Iraq and Afghanistan, for the massive flight of people into Europe.
According to Babar Baloch, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Budapest, 80 percent of immigrants to Europe come from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The remaining 20 percent come from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burundi and sub-Saharan Africa.
The migration crisis led to a meeting in Prague of the Visegrad Group (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia) plus Romania and Latvia, as opposed to mandatory quotas in the European Union (EU) to distribute some 120,000 asylum applicants in two years.
At the meeting of foreign ministers of those nations with their colleague from Luxembourg, Jean Assaltborn, whose country chairs currently the EU, a consensus on an issue that remains divided the bloc should have been sought after.
In this regard, the Czech interior minister, Milan Chovanec, said that in the meeting with his counterparts from the EU in Brussels he will question the legality of the method of binding quotas for the 28-nation community.
The ministerial meeting will take place a day before the extraordinary summit of the bloc, where common strategies will be defined to deal with the immigration crisis.
Only yesterday, three thousand 400 refugees came to Austria from Hungary, which sealed its border with Serbia and intends to do so with Croatia, with fences and barbed wire, in addition to criminalizing illegal crossing of the border.
Twenty-two thousands foreigners arrived in Austria this weekend, while another five thousand crossed into Serbia, through the pass of Presevo, on the Macedonian border.
According to a UN report, some four thousand people arrive daily to the Greek coast. The day before, 13 people died near Turkey, from where the refugees depart, after a collision between a ferry and a boat carrying foreigners.
A total of 442,440 reached European shores after crossing the Mediterranean Sea, while two thousand 921 died in the attempt.
