TEHRAN, Aug. 29 (MNA) – Iranian national basketball team defeated South Korea in its first match in the William Jones Cup International Tournament.

The match between Iran and South Korea national teams on the first day of the 37th William Jones Cup International Basketball Tournament was held today morning in Taiwan in which Iran won 77-46.

Iran’s German coach Dirk Bauermann alternatively used 12 available players including Mahdi Kamrani, Sajjad Mashayekhi, Javad Davari, Farid Aslani, Saeed Davarpanah, Mohammad Jamshidi, Roozbeh arghavan, Asghar Kardoost, Hamed Haddadi, Mohammad Hasanzadeh, Behnam Yakhchali, and Oshin Sahakian.

Iran will hold its second match against the host on Sunday.

William Jones Cup is an international basketball tournament held annually in Taiwan. It was named after Renato William Jones, a basketball performer and one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Iran's national basketball team has taken part in many periods of the competition at the invitation of Taiwan Basketball Federation, and even in 2009, 2011 and 2013, has won the title. In 2012, Iranian team Mahram attended the tournament and became vice-champion. On the whole, Iran with four championships ranks second after US in these competitions.

The tournament started today August 29 and will continue to September 6.
