TEHRAN, Aug. 22 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham declined US president's allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing them as baseless.

"US officials' repeated claims are in line with the interests of the Zionist regime to satisfy pro-Israel lobbies and indicate the depth of confusion and suspicion among US officials regarding their national interests," Afkham said.

"US foreign policy is entrenched in the country's political and partisan competitions," Afkham said, adding that American officials resorted to illusive and dangerous ideas and intimidation which have cost irreparable damages to the world and is the root cause of international insecurity.

She said that Israel is the main source of instability and terrorism in the Middle East and is supported by US government.

Afkham stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran rejects any restrictions on its defense in the political, military and security fields.

She said threatening a state with military attack is against the United Nations Charter and will entail international responsibility for the US officials and administration.

In his most comprehensive effort to assure wavering Democrats, President Obama wrote in a letter to the Congress that the United States would unilaterally maintain economic pressure and deploy military options if needed to deter Iranian aggression, both during and beyond the proposed nuclear accord.

The Aug. 19 letter, obtained by The New York Times, was addressed to Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York, but is also aimed at other Democrats with concerns about the deal. For Obama, it reflects steps the administration could take outside the agreement.
