The University of Toronto, the world-renowned community of over 80000 students in Canada, is hosting a series of sessions on music at the suggestion of the Iranian association of this university.
The first session will be held on August 9 and feature Mohsen Sharifian’s lecture on music and his workshop.
Mohsen Sharifian, founder of Lian music band, has hailed from the southern Iranian province of Bushehr. He has spent the last two decades immersing himself in the musical traditions of the region, writing several books and collecting songs and dance-tunes and composing new works inspired by them.
Born in 1975, Sharifian attained a bachelor degree in Social Science and Research and a master degree in Music from Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. He is a virtuoso performer on the two ancient, emblematic instruments of the Persian Gulf, the Nay-Anban (bagpipe) and the Nay-Jofti (double-pipe reed flute) and since forming the Lian Band in 1993 he has released nine albums and performed around the world, from the US to the Far East.
Following his perfromance at the University of Toronto, Sharifian will attend the Prismatic Arts Festival in the Canadian city of Halifax to perform and introduce his traditional Bushehri music to music lovers of various nations and cultures.
The festival will be held from 19-23 August in Canada.
