TEHRAN, Feb. 16 (MNA) – Iran’s newly-appointed UN envoy Gholamali Khoshroo has arrived in New York to begin his mission there.

Upon arrival Khoshroo maintained that due to the broad scope of the Islamic Republic’s capabilities, various tasks were assigned to him which he must perform as efficiently as possible.

Khoshroo stressed the need for combating extremism and violence, as well as rejecting anti-Iranian sentiments and Islamophobia; “in the case of promoting peace and stability in the region and the world as well as removing the unjust sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, we must take advantage of all opportunities especially what the UN can present to us,” he said.

Iran’s new UN envoy expressed hope to follow up on the realizing of Iran’s objectives more so now than ever.

Khoshroo is scheduled to present his credentials to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday.

Back in April 2014, US president Barack Obama signed a law which effectively barred Iranian diplomat Hamid Aboutalebi from serving as Tehran’s ambassador to the UN. The legislation was based on a bill in US Congress claiming that the Iranian diplomat was involved in the takeover of the US embassy in Tehran following the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Finally on Jan. 28, 2015 Iran appointed Khoshroo as the country’s permanent representative at the United Nations to protect the national interests of the country to the fullest extent possible and promote the country’s international position, “especially in consideration of the critical regional and international situation.”

Khoshroo studied sociology at Tehran University and the New School for Social Research in New York. As a seasoned diplomat, he has served in various positions in Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was deputy foreign minister for legal and International affairs between 2002 and 2005 when Iran started its nuclear negotiations with world powers.
