TEHRAN, Jan. 30 (MNA) – International Affairs Adviser to Iran’s Leader after visiting Putin in Moscow announced that Russia agrees to upgrade Iran’s status at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Velayati, who was delivering the message of President Hassan Rouhani as his sepcial envoy to Moscow, met with President Putin yesterday in Moscow and the two discussed the issues of mutual interest and bilateral cooperation.

In his meeting with President Putin, the Iranian special envoy handed over a message from President Rouhani to his Russian counterpart.

The Iranian official meanwhile deemed the Iran-Russia cooperation on the Syria as a positive example that could lead to more multilateral cooperation on regional issues.

Noting the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and its membership, Velayati added: “Russia agrees to upgrade Iran’s status at the organization, however, this will take some time.”

Velayati also held separate meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Energy Alexander Novak. The theme of talks was based on bilateral ties and cooperation on energy and economy as well as regional and international issues.
