TEHRAN, Jan. 17 (MNA) – Iran’s representative to the UN has said NAM again requests the Security Council to fulfill its obligations under the provisions of the UN Charter and take decisive action to meet the rights of the Palestinian people.

Iran’s representative to the UN, Hossein Dehghani, who is also head of the NAM committee, made the remarks during an open debate held in New York on Middle East including the current situation in Palestine.

Over 67 years, Dehghani stated, "the Palestinian issue has been on the agenda of the United Nations, however, as we saw in the Security Council vote recently, once again the Council failed to perform its duties regarding Palestinian issue, leaving the Palestinians with no hope for the realization of their right to freedom and denying their long-awaited peace and justice."

“Despite the serious international efforts and repeated requests to reach a solution based on international law, Palestinian territories remain under the occupation of Israeli military who ignores the rights and freedoms of Palestinian people,” Dehghani said, adding that the situation and inability to resolve the issue obviously undermined the credibility of the international system and the rule of law.

Iranian envoy asserted that the Security Council once again proved inability in commitment to its obligations in resolving the crisis in the Middle East and even implementing its own issued resolutions.

"A recent poll results also showed that despite international consensus on the issue of Palestine, Security Council is not ready and willing to perform its responsibility in this regard."

He emphasized that NAM again requests the Security Council to fulfill its obligations under the provisions of the UN Charter and take decisive action to realize the rights of the Palestinian people.

“Iran, while reaffirming the right of the Palestinian and Lebanese resistance against aggression and regaining the occupied territories, is willing to establish peace and justice in the Middle East, which requires respect for all internationally accepted rules and procedures without discrimination,” Iran’s Dehghani reiterated at the end.
