TEHRAN, Nov. 17 (MNA) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani attended a press conference with his Russian counterpart on Monday, Nov. 17, and discussed promotion of economic ties.

While pointing to Iran and Russia’s deep bilateral ties, Ali Larijani maintained that during the meeting with Russian State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin, promotion of economic ties between Iran and Russia was discussed.

Other issues discussed were the terrorist activities in the region especially in Iraq and Syria, nuclear and parliamentary cooperation, as well as some international issues.

Sergey Naryshkin, for his part, stressed that his visit would undoubtedly reinforce political dialogue and bilateral parliamentary relations between the two countries and Russia regards Iran as a reliable partner for cooperation.

Mr. Naryshkin referred to combating terrorism and drug trafficking as were discussed during the meeting on Sunday, and said, “Russia has proposed that Iran become observer at the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) Parliamentary Assembly, since we believe that Iran’s membership to this organization can improve stability and security in the region.”

In regard to terms of cooperation between Iran and Russia after the measures the West has taken against this country, Naryshkin asserted that economic relations were expanding between the two countries and other cooperation in areas such as oil, gas, nuclear energy and agriculture was also improving and this would totally benefit Russia.

He also pointed to the drop in oil prices and the sanctions imposed by the West against Russia and said, “in regard to western sanctions, Iran and Russia are in the same position. We believe that sanctions are a tool for political and economic blackmail and are in complete violation of International Law.”

Russia is prepared to negotiate with oil producer countries to stabilize prices at a global level.

The Russian parliamentary delegation, headed by Naryshkin, is in Tehran at the invitation of Larijani. He has also invited Ali Larijani to visit Russia in turn.
