TEHRAN, Oct. 30 (MNA) – Iran’s FM during a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Kenneth Eliasson has said that countries cannot fight ISIL in Iraq, while supporting it in Syria.

During the meeting with the UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Kenneth Eliasson on Wednesday, Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed that Iran seeks stability and peace in the region and on this basis has always strongly opposed to terrorism and extremism.

Zarif pointed to the need to adopt a unified approach in combating terrorism and extremism and said, “you cannot claim to be fighting ISIL in Iraq and at the same time reinforce this terrorist group in Syria.”

Zarif also commended the recent agreement in Yemen and called for all to support the agreement and not to undermine it.

The Deputy UN Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, for his part, lamented the continuance of the conflicts in Iraq and Syria and called for cooperation of all countries in the region to resolve the issues.

Eliasson also stressed the need for increasing dialogue and interaction among the countries in the region, especially between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

“ISIL is a serious threat,” he stated, “all nations, whether in or outside the region, consider this terrorist group as a serious threat.”

He deemed Iran’s role in resolving regional issues prominent and stressed the continuation of consultations between the UN and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
