In one of the biggest rallies in the city since the end of apartheid, demonstrators carried posters stating "Israel is an apartheid state" and "Stop Israeli murder".
With some demonstrators wearing T-shirts reading "Africa understands colonialism" and chanting "Free Palestine,” protesters marched through the center of the city to the national parliament. Organizers and officials have estimated number of people to be between 30,000 to 50,000 people.
Demonstrators called for "decisive action from the South African government against the Israeli attacks, killings, displacement and destruction of the Gaza Strip". There have been calls from several organizations for Pretoria to expel the Israeli ambassador.
Nearly 2,000 Palestinians have so far been killed in Israel offensive against Gaza since July 8. According to international organizations, around 10,000 people are injured and at least a quarter of Gaza population are displaced.
