TEHRAN, Feb. 13 (MNA) – Iranian researchers used a type of nanoparticle to improve the anticorrosive properties of coatings used in oil and gas transfer pipelines, INIC reports.

According to Iran Nanotechnology Initiate Council (INIC), Iranian researchers from Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) used a type of nanoparticle to improve the anticorrosive properties of coatings used in oil and gas transfer pipelines. Results showed that the coatings’ durability doubles in case nanoparticles are used.

Application of nanoparticles is one of the approaches to increase the life of coatings. In addition to improving the properties of coatings, nanoparticles increase the life of coatings and therefore, they decrease the costs.

The aim of the research was to find new solutions for the problem of petroleum industry in the field of coatings used in oil and gas pipelines. Improving the anticorrosive properties of epoxy-based coatings and properties of the coatings against sunlight are among the most important objectives of the research. Black carbon nanoparticles were used in epoxy structure in this research.

It is easy to use carbon black nanoparticles in industry since it is a cheap and available nanoparticle. However, accumulation of particles and making a bulk at micrometric scale is the biggest problem in application of this nanoparticle, which decreases its properties. Therefore, this study tried to overcome this problem by modifying the nanoparticles.

Results of corrosion tests on the produced coatings showed that the life of coating doubles and its performance significantly increases when black carbon nanoparticles are modified and dispersed properly in the structure of the coating. Since preparation and application of coatings are very expensive, boosting the durability of coatings can be very cost-effective.

Results of the research have been published in Polymer Bulletin, vol. 72, issue 9, 2015, pp. 2297-2310.
